Stories of Otterbein College

David L. Deever

During my last two years as a mathematics teacher at Otterbein, it is my intention to collect and publish on the web as many stories about Otterbein as I can. These will be from my own memory, which goes back (vaguely) to 1947, and, as I can collect them, from the memories of others.

I approach these as a storyteller, not as an historian; many dates will be rough approximations and details may be vague or omitted. However, the stories will be, as Mark Twain once said, "…mostly the truth. A few stretchers here and there, but mostly the truth." Likewise, I don't wish to duplicate the documentary efforts of the T&C or the Sibyl. I am most interested in human interest stories and stories which give insight into the character of Otterbein College, its faculty, staff, and students; in particular, I want to capture stories that otherwise might be forgotten. These stories are at various stages of revision and editing. I invite anyone who can supply such stories or improved details for existing ones to send them to me at:

or to:

I don’t wish to invade anyone’s privacy, but it is my intention, where embarrassment would be no more than minor and the situation broadly known at the time, to name names explicitly. After all, this is primarily about people. These are in no particular order at the moment. I suppose that when I get enough I will have to come up with some sort of organization.
