Serenades and The Otterbein Sweetheart Song

The tradition of serenades goes back quite a ways at Otterbein. It was typical that when a couple got engaged the man's fraternity and/or the woman's sorority would provide a serenade. These were very formal affairs. The couple would be present in formal attire while the fraternity and/or sorority would sing senenade songs to them.

Later on the tradition of serenades for engagements disappeared but the serenades themselves didn't; they continued at various random times when one greek organization would serenade others. A fraternity would offer a serenade at each of the women's dorms or a sorority would serenade at each fraternity house. (Sororities didn't have houses in those days.)

Usually the songs would consist of the Otterbein Serenade Medley, the special serenade song of the group, and finally the Otterbein Sweetheart Song. The Otterbein Serenade Medley consisted of a set of standard, popular, serenade songs arranged and pitched so that you could segue directly from one to the next. The Otterbein Sweetheart song was a serenade song particular to Otterbein. It was written by James McCloy, a physics professor, and set to music by A.R. Spessard, a music professor and the director of the glee clubs. The words of the Serenade Medley, and the words and music of the Sweetheart Song, are given below.

Serenade Medley

Down in the old cherry crchard, Under the old cherry tree;
Ev'ry night by the moon's silvery light, She would sing love songs to me;
There's where I fondly caressed her, There's where she promised she'd be;
Down in the old cherry orchard, Under the old cherry tree.

On a Chinese honeymoon, In the merry month of June;
Together we will wander, Beneath the silvery moon;
And we'll buy a toy baloon, And we'll sail it to the moon;
In the land of tea and roses, On a Chinese honey...

... Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon, Won't you please shine down on me;
Oh, Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon, Hiding behind that tree;
Here comes the farmer with a big shotgun (clap!),
He's gonna get ya if you start to run;
So, Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon,
(If you ever did your shinin', now's the time to do your shinin',)
Won't you please shine down on me.

Oh, shine on, shine on harvest moon, up in the sky,
I ain't had no lovin' since January, February, June or July;
Snow time ain't no time to sit around and spoon,
So shine on, shine on harvest moon.
(For me and my gal/guy.)

Honey, honey, bless your heart, My honey that I love so true;
My heart beats true, I love but you, My honey that I love so true.

Tell me why the stars do shine, Tell me why the ivy twines;
Tell my why the ocean's blue, And I will tell you just why I love you.
Because God made the stars to shine, Because God made the ivy twine;
Because God made the ocean blue, Because God made you, that's why I love you.
