The Hymn Book Committee

During the period of the fifties it seems that Otterbein actually had an (ad hoc) committee called the "Hymn Book Committee". As nearly as I can tell, membership usually consisted of (top row, left) John Becker (head librarian), (top row, right) Jack Coulter (English), (bottom row, left) Wade Miller (development), and (bottom row, right) Prof. Ray (English).  Apparently the committee had a lot to do because they met most  weeks on Wednesday for all afternoon.  In order that they could proceed with their work without interruption, as I understood it, they met on the golf course.

By the seventies, as I gathered, no one would believe in the existence of a "Hymn Book" committee, so the name was changed to the "Library Committee."  The meeting pattern, however, did not change. As time passed the membership of the committee changed, and I learn that Bob Gatti (Asst. Dean for Student Affairs then, Dean now) became a member;  this was done with the encouragement of Dean Van, his boss, who was "Pleased to see him taking an interest in campus matters outside the student personnel office."

I understand that the library committee is currently more traditional in both its meeting place and its activities.
