In Trouble at Denison

This is another football rivalry story. In the fall of 1960 Otterbein had Denison on its schedule. A small group of freshmen, during the week before the game, decided to go to Denison in the middle of the night and to burn a big letter "O" in the front lawn.

The students travelled to the campus and poured gasoline on the lawn in a big letter "O". With that done, the student carrying the matches proceeded to light the gasoline. He was, to say the least, extremely surprised to discover that he was, in fact, standing inside the "O".

The choice was between being burned literally or being burned figuratively by being caught. The student opted to run through the flames and, fortunately, suffered nothing worse than quite a bit of singed hair.

A math major would have known, I hope, that a circle has an inside and an outside, and taken care to be in the right one.
