Course Catalog Description

This seminar is intended for STEM students participating in the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program. Overarching goals of the course are to promote a sense of self-awareness and social belonging, self-efficacy, and the adoption of a growth mind-set that enhances success in STEM. Topics will also include resources to aid in the transition from high school to university; tools for establishing a strong academic foundation; introduction to undergraduate research and internship experiences; learning strategies for success in STEM courses, technical writing and communication skills; guest speakers and field trips; networking among STEM students and faculty on campus; career exploration and professional development.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Interact more skillfully with COF scholars, STEM peers, and professors
  2. Utilize on-campus resources
  3. Reflect on their individual opportunities and challenges
  4. Understand the discipline-specific skills needed for success in STEM coursework
  5. Understand undergraduate research and internship opportunities
  6. Demonstrate public speaking skills
