Service | Artifacts of Service |
All faculty at Otterbein must evidence a commitment to
the mission of the College and the basic goals of liberal education. I believe that I
have met these criteria in the following ways.
Teacher education is an interesting profession. Everything one does
seems to work naturally into the area of service. The belief that I hold as an
educator is that I am responsible to build a community of teachers and learners
concerned with humane, democratic, socially just and equitable practice so as
to liberate all voices and to give each individual a chance for a complete and
fulfilling involvement in society. Service opportunities are a part of my
practice. I believe that the job of teaching is one which encompasses not only
my classroom practice but how I live and breathe. Therefore, service to me is essential if
I am to model what teaching and learning looks like to middle childhood teacher
candidates.
Each of
these experiences has helped me to see my role on a college campus as a teacher
and a learner in a very broad way. Each event, each experience, each
opportunity, has led me to teach with more insight and more connections to my
students and the other faculty and staff on campus and the broader
community. I would like to highlight
one element in each of the categories to expand upon. I have also added a section on grants that I
have written or been involved with in some way.
