Term Paper
CSC 482
Spring 2001
Topic selection deadline:
January 30.
Paper due: in class on
February 20.
Presentations: February 20 and 27.
This is an individual assignment. It is worth 35% of your grade.
Write a 1200 word research paper on a
computer-related ethics topic of your choice.
On February 20 or 27, you
will give a 10 minute presentation to the class on your topic. You are required
to supplement your speech with an audiovisual presentation displayable using
PowerPoint or Internet Explorer. You
must prepare for this and rehearse, because 10 minutes is a very short
time! Be prepared to present on
February 20; the presentation schedule will be handed out that morning. I will
group the presentations by topic, and schedule time for questions and
discussion after each group of presentations.
Give me a list of three topics (first
choice, second choice, third choice) by January 30. I will
assign your topic from those three and verify by email no later than January
31. There is a limit of two presentations on a given topic; if necessary I will
pool the last 4 digits of your student IDs and assign the topic based on the
two highest values
There are literally hundreds of topics to choose from, many of which are suggested or discussed in the Killer Robot book. Internet-related issues are great; be sure to take a scholarly approach. For inspiration, North Carolina State University has a great web site on computer ethics compiled by students. http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/eos/info/computer_ethics/
