Detailed specifications of web page guidelines:

Preamble

In order to acheive consistency, readability, and compatibility
amoung various architectures, we suggest using standard HTML
features. This means that background color, text color, and
link colors will use the default of the user's browser and will
be unspecified in the HTML itself. This often will consist of
grey background, black text, and blue links. The HTML should
	be as simple as possible.

Specific Guidelines

These guidelines are based on the 10 Web Site Evaluation guidelines
agreed upon by the class earlier in the semester.

	1. The webmaster or system administrator must weekly revise and
update (if needed) the content of the web site.
	2. All browsers should be able the easily read the web site's
pages, including text browsers such as Lynx. This implies a
minimal (or nonexistent) use of graphics, image maps, frames,
	    sound, etc.
	3. The site must not contain any dead links. If guideline #1 is
followed, this should not be a problem.
	4. Links will consist of text only and will be the default color
defined by the user's browser (usually blue).
	5. Pages will not be longer than 1 screen, or 2 screens at most.
The main page should never be longer than 1 screen.
	6. All pages in the web site will have the same, consistent look
	    and feel.
	    - the font type and color will not be specified in the HTML;
this will be determined by the default of the user's browser
	    - the background color will not be specified in the HTML;
this will be determined by the default of the user's browser
	    - every page will have a text navigation bar at the top and/or
the side of the page; all nav bars will contain a core set
of links that are the same for every page; this core set of
links should include: a link to the main CSC page, a link
the SMSU page; additional links will be included as appropriate
to the content of the page
	    - standard HTML will be used to implement horizontal lines,
bullets, and lists (where needed) instead of graphics
	7. All pages will contain a link to contact the webmaster and
	    a "last updated" time.
	8. The use of graphics, animation, and sound is discouraged. These
things tend to age quickly, detract from the content of the page,
increase download time, etc. A small, unobtrusive department
logo would be acceptable, however. The logo should use few
colors (limited to school colors). Such a logo, if used, should
be incorporated into all pages so that pages are consistent with
	    each other.
	9. Accomodate disabilities. This should be no problem if other
guidelines are followed (refer especially to Preamble and
	    guideline #2).
	10. Minimize page load time. Again, no special consideration
should be required in order to meet this guideline if all
	     others are followed.
