| Areas of Expertise |
 |
 |
Cartography/GIS/GPS - Adept
at interpreting and creating maps. Have amassed a sizeable
collection of current and historic USGS topographic and
oil company maps. Expert with Delorme software, global
positioning and other cartographic technologies. |
 |
 |
Diners and Independent Restaurants - Having
grown up in Baltimore (a Mecca of diner activity and
setting for the Barry Levinson classic, Diner),
diners are second nature. Have documented diners and
smaller independent restaurants – past and present –
along the entire length of U.S. Route 40 (Atlantic City
to San Francisco). |
 |
 |
George R. Stewart - Focus
of studies include Stewart’s odological work (e.g., U.S.
40, N.A. 1), works that focus on or rely heavily
on the concept of place (e.g., Names on the Land,
Sheep Rock) and historical works (e.g., California
Trail, Ordeal by Hunger). Have conducted extensive
research of the Stewart archives at the University of
California and maintain a relationship with the Stewart
family. Currently updating all 114 sites from U.S.
40, noting the cultural and landscape changes that
have occurred during the past half century. |
 |
 |
Instructional Technology/Performance
Support/Performance Centered Design - An
award winning designer and developer of instructional
technology systems, especially those which are computer-based.
Expert with authoring tools and systems such as IconAuthor,
Authorware, Quest, Pilot and Dreamweaver/CourseBuilder.
A “student” of industry expert Gloria Gery. Performance
Support and Performance Centered Design is a holistic
approach to systems design and development that embeds
elements of training and support into the system
– as opposed to layering it on as an afterthought. Gloria’s
definition is the best: “an integrated… environment that
is available to and easily accessible by each employee
and is structured to provide immediate, individualized…
access to the full range of information, software, guidance,
advice and assistance, data, images, tools, and assessment
and monitoring systems to permit job performance with
minimal support and intervention by others.” Adept at
analysis, synthesis and development of technical solutions. |
 |
 |
Jack Kerouac - Currently
researching Kerouac’s travels during the On the Road
era (1947-1951) and reconstructing his day-to-day activities
and places he stayed or visited. |
 |
 |
Media Selection - Have
studied numerous models for selecting the most appropriate
instructional media based on behavioral, organizational,
environmental and financial criteria. Currently working
on a recursive computer-based selection methodology that
tailors itself to the exact needs or an organization. |
 |
 |
Milestones - Have
documented all of the milestones along the National Road
(Baltimore to Indianapolis). Have recorded and photographed
all of the surviving markers and sites of missing markers
including location, construction, inscription, etc. Have
also begun noting milestones elsewhere in the United
State, particularly along the Atlantic Coast colonial
roads. |
 |
 |
Odology - Knowledgeable
about the relationship between the landscape and human
activity relating to roads and other modes of transportation.
Has a particular interest and focus on highway systems
and support infrastructure (e.g., accommodations, diners
and restaurants, gas stations) prior to the development
of the Interstates. |
 |
 |
U.S. Route 40 - Inspired
by George Stewart’s U.S. 40, have been studying
the highway and its predecessor roads (National Road,
Harding Highway, Lincoln Highway, Victory Highway, Santa
Fe, Oregon and California Trails) since the late 1960’s.
Have shot approximately 10,000 photographs of the highway
and have amassed what may be the largest collection of
printed material relating to the highway. Have collected
approximately 4,000 vintage postcards of scenic views
and businesses along the highway. Have also collected
topographic maps for all 3,200 miles of the highway.
Currently updating all 114 sites from U.S. 40,
noting the cultural and landscape changes that have occurred
during the past half century. |
 |
 |
Web Site Development - An
award winning web site designer and developer. Sites
have received praise in the mainstream press including
USAToday, Knight-Ridder syndication and a three-page
story in Delta Airline’s in-flight magazine Sky.
Power user with Macromedia’s Dreamweaver. Highly
skilled with dynamic web pages using PERL/CGI and ASP/ADO. |
