John Allen Shauck
by Brianna Elsmore
John A. Shauck, the brother of Moses
Shauck, was born on a farm in Richland County in 1841. He attended
Otterbein University from 1861 to 1866 and received a degree in the Classics,
however his studies were interrupted by his voluntary service in the Civil
War. Just as his brother, he mustered into Company I of the 136 Infantry
on May 13, 1864 and served in garrison duty in Washington D.C. until August
31, 1864.
After the war, Shauck returned to Otterbein
and finished his undergraduate work, then enrolled in law school at Michigan
University and received his degree in law. Shauck worked as a partner
in the law firm Bolton & Shauck for several years, and then he advanced
his career by becoming a circuit court judge. He also sat on the
Court of Review for Ohio and served on the Supreme Court Judge of Ohio.
On September 11, 1907, Shauck returned to Otterbein
and gave a speech to its faculty and staff. He
encouraged students to gladly accept the challenges of higher learning
and to broaden their horizons by taking a variety of courses. Ironically,
even though this Otterbein graduate became a very influential professional
and was asked tp return to Otterbein to give a speech, his name was left
off the Civil War Memorial plaque.
