Day 2: Frankfurt to Cologne

Tuesday, July 13 : Frankfurt to Köln

Great breakfast: smoked salmon (lachs, pronounced "lox"), seeded rolls, fruit, eggs, mushroom salad. Left at 8:30 to hit the autobahn (German equivalent to our interstate system). Traveled west to the Rhine river, where we boarded the Lorelei for a one hour boat tour of the river. Steep hillsides, castles, and vineyards. Weather cool and gray. Got off boat at Boppard and headed north on the bus past Bonn and into Köln (Cologne), our destination for the night. In a light misty rain, we toured the Dom. It is huge and like most of the city was damaged in the war. Walked by Roman museum and museum of modern art, then down to the river along remains of an ancient Roman road. Went to Früh Am Dom beer hall on the plaza for a kölsch, the regional style. Served in cylindrical 200 ml (7 oz) glasses and delicious. Walked through shopping area in search of shirt for Katie. She wants pink with German writing but all the shirts were in English! We bussed to a Holiday Inn in a nice residential neighborhood several kilometers from downtown. Walked through a wooded park and children's zoo and the neighborhood. So-so buffet dinner at the hotel.
