Textbooks:

Software Engineering (Fifth Edition), Ian Sommerville, Addison-Wesley.

Prerequisite:

CSC 325.

Course Purpose: This course serves the dual purposes of learning the principles and techniques for developing "large scale" software systems, and applying those techniques and principles to a project developed by student programming teams.

Examinations: There will be three exams in all, the third being a non-comprehensive final. They will be approximately evenly spaced, and announced well in advance. Exams will contain a combination of objective questions and short problems and essays. The final exam is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Monday, May 11, 1998. An approximate schedule is shown on the syllabus.

Homework: Homework will be assigned in the form of written and programming assignments. Late homework will receive reduced credit of 10% per 24-hour period (beginning at the time due). The major assignment is a "large scale" system to developed by programming teams. Project details will be covered at the time of project and team assignments.

Grading Policy: The three exams contribute 45% of the final grade (first two are 13% each and the final is 19%). The term project is worth 45% and the other assignments contribute the other 10%. Individual components are not assigned letter grades. This occurs only to the overall score, which is normally graded on a 90-80-70-60 scale. The scale may be lowered to reflect a curve but will not be raised.

Attendance: It is to your advantage to attend class and your responsibility to obtain information presented in your absence. If you miss an exam, you will receive a zero for it unless prior arrangements have been made.

Other Policies: The University has published policies concerning plagiarism, cheating and responsible use of computer resources. See "Student Rights and Responsibilities" in the Undergraduate Catalog or check the World Wide Web. Violation of these may result in a failing grade for the course. Blatant copying of individual assignments will result in shared credit among the persons involved for a first offense, and zero credit thereafter.

Disabled or Differently-Abled Students: Anyone who has special requirements should meet with the course instructor as soon as possible. The University has many resources available, e.g., the Learning Diagnostic Center and the Writing Center, to assist students with their learning experiences.
