Although best known for its fruits, many grain crops are also grown in the region. A note about geography: there is a ridge called the Escarpment that runs parallel to the south shore of lake Ontario and crossing the Niagara river (its crossing is the original site of Niagara Falls). It forms a weather barrier, trapping the moderate lake climate. Most of the wineries and fruit industry lie between the Escarpment and the Lake Ontario shore. Once you climb the escarpment going south, the climate and agriculture are both more typical. We climbed it on bicycle early this morning, just south of Jordan.
