Selected Internet Issues
The class was divided into groups of 5 students each. Groups were given an Internet-related issue to discuss
with one member designated to record the discussion and later report it to the class. The issues are not technical
in nature; they focus on various ways in which we use the Internet. After discussions, comments were shared
with the class. We repeated the process for different issues until the class period ended.
Issue: social networking
Many people use the Internet for social networking. Using Facebook and/or MySpace
as examples, discuss the benefits and risks involved.
- What are the benefits of social networking systems?
- Keeping in touch with others both near and far away
- Advertising
- Creativity and personal expression
- Entertainment
- Easy way to make friends
- Share pictures
- Something to do when bored
- Easy quick communication
- Keep up on social events
- Job opportunities
- Networking
- Keeping in touch with people you would not normally keep in touch with
- Find old friends
- Form groups
- Police can catch people involved in illegal acts
- You can block people
- What are the risks of social networking systems?
- Facebook creepers and stalkers
- Too much personal information put out there
- Gossip
- Incriminating pictures
- Pedophiles
- Don't really know for sure who you are talking to
- Someone could gain access to your private information
- Businesses
- Viruses
- Spammers
- False advertisements
- False identities
- Drama
- People you don't want to talk to can find you
- Harassment
- Getting caught by police

- Blackmail
- Employers can look there
- How can these risks be addressed?
- Privacy control settings
- Monitoring of public sites

- Don't post personal information
- Don't post information you don't want others to see
- Don't accept friend requests from people you don't know
- Don't click unknown links
- Don't put bad pictures or negative blogs up on your profile
- Use a virus protector

Issue: medical information
It is possible for a person's medical history to bestored in databases located on servers
accessible via the Internet (not necessarily the Web).
- What are the benefits of having medical history information available online?
- Quicker than flipping through files
- Save storage space
- Accessible anywhere
- Others can get this information even if you are unconcious
- Easy to access in an emergency situation
- Records will not be lost or misplaced
- Easier for medical personnel to access after you move
- Other doctors can view information to treat you
- Better organized
- Always available
- Saves time
- Find out information while ambulance is on call
- You can learn your family history of diseases
- Never have to re-enter information
- All information is gathered in one place
- Effective against mistakes
- Provides research data
- If your identity is stolen, can be used to prove you are you
- What are the risks of having medical history information available online?
- People can see entire medical history
- Security can be compromised
- If computer system breaks the information is gone forever
- An unauthorized person can access and/or change the information
- Easy identity theft
- Employers may not hire you due to your health problems
- Privacy issues and hackers
- Mistaken identity
- Public can know your personal information
- Public would be able to know your weaknesses and take advantage of them
- Computer could go down, delaying access to information in an emergency
