Description Instruction in a specific computer programming language. Offered on demand. 2 Credit Hours.
Prerequisite COMP 120
Objectives By student vote, the language for this course offering is Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET). By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Effectively work with major Visual Basic language constructs. These include but are not limited to: assignments, conditional and iterative logic, numerical and string data types, arrays, functions, subroutines, classes, objects and exception handling.
  • Write object-oriented programs in the Visual Basic language.
  • Use Visual Studio to create event-driven graphical Visual Basic applications.
  • Work with data files and databases in Visual Basic.
  • Explain what the .NET framework is and how it compares to other runtime support frameworks.
Text No textbook is required. We will utilize online resources.
Work Load "Students are expected to spend three hours per week (including class hours) in study for each quarter hour of credit attempted." See 2009-2010 Undergraduate Course Catalog in the third paragraph under The Calendar, at http://catalog.otterbein.edu/content.php?catoid=6&navoid=213.   COMP 121 is 2 credit hours and meets 2 hours per week so you are expected to spend about 4 hours per week outside of class.
Exams There will be no exams. The final exam period will be devoted to term project presentations.
Labs This course does not include a formal lab period. However we will spend some class time working on tutorials and projects.

Any work submitted for individual evaluation that includes work done by another or copying of another's work violates the academic integrity policy of this course. When academic misconduct is found in any individual assignment you submit, you will receive a zero grade for that assignment. The misconduct may also be reported to the Office of the Academic Dean. If a previous academic misconduct offense is on your record, you will receive a grade of F for this course and a referral to the judicial system.
