Course Catalog Description
Advanced techniques and applications of electro-acoustic music practices. Topics
include audio and MIDI recording/sequencing techniques as continued from MUSC
2050; introductions to sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, interactive
computer music and motion graphics and their application with fixed media and
interactive techniques. The course will culminate with a recital of fixed media
and interactive class projects. Prerequisites: MUSC 2050 with a grade of C or
better or permission of the instructor.
Course Objectives
This course is intended to expand the student's understanding and appreciation
of electro-acoustic music through the analysis and composition of music in the
genre for both fixed media and interactive performance. Upon completion of this
course the student will have developed projects which incorporate audio and
MIDI recording/sequence, sound design, computer-generated algorithmic composition,
and motion graphics all interactive with live performance.

All assignments are due as assigned in student folders on the D: drive of the EMS computer. Late assignments will be accepted but will result in the loss of one point (see grading rubric for each project) for each class session it is late.

Attendance
Students are expected to attend all classes and are responsible for all that
transpires in class. Because this class is an advanced electronic music class
directed toward the presentation of a recital, the following attendance infractions
shall result in a specific loss of grade.
Stage setup and strike:
All participants are expected to help set and strike the stage for the recital.
Unexcused failure to participate shall result in the loss of one letter grade.
For the Performance:
Unexcused absence shall result in a failing grade for the term.
Unexcused tardy may result in the loss of two letter grades.
All members of the class shall also be available to rehearse and perform on
the recital as required by the music of his/her classmates.

All academic work should be your own. Academic dishonesty (plagiarism and cheating)
may result in automatic failure of the assignment or the course itself, and
you will be referred to the Academic Affairs Office for suspension or expulsion
proceedings. You are plagiarizing when you:
1. Copy material from a source without using quotation marks and proper citation.
2. Follow the movement of the source, substituting words and sentences but keeping
its meaning, without citing it.
3. Lift phrases or terms from a source and embed them in your own prose without
using quotation marks and proper citation.
4. Borrow ideas (that are not common knowledge) from a source without proper
citation.
5. Turn in a paper wholly or partially written by someone else.

Statement on Credit Hour Definition/expectation for student work
For each credit hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction, students are
expected to engage in two hours of out-of-class course-related work (readings,
homework, studying, project preparation, etc.). A four credit hour course requires
eight hours per week of out-of-class work.
