MUSIC 280 - Beginning Composition

Description
MUSIC 280, Beginning Composition, will seek to help the student develop compositional skills.  Weekly
projects will focus on specific compositional techniques or devices.

Evaluation
Weekly Projects (10% each)    60%
Final Project                             40%

Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstances.  Please refer to the Campus Life
Handbook for Otterbein's governing policy.

Projects
The first six projects will deal with specific compositional problems.  They are to be short compositions, each
utilizing a different one of the following instrumental groups:  voice, keyboard, woodwinds, brass, percussion,
strings.

The Final Project will be a piece in somewhat larger form demonstrating sophisticated
compositional technique and is to be realized in place of the final examination.  It will be the composer's
responsibility to contact and rehearse the musicians required in the final project.

Description
        MUSIC 448, Advanced Composition, a continuation of MUSIC 280, will seek to help the student
        further develop skills in music composition through work on a single major (or several less-than-major)
        compositional projects.

Evaluation
        Successful completion of  a major compositional project. 85%

        This project shall be in large form and shall demonstrate a sophisticated development of ideas and
        command of advanced compositional skills.

        Successful completion of the Listening Requirement:  15%

I. Weeks 1-7: Combine one of each scoring project with one of each of the homogeneous ensembles.
Prepare a range/transposition chart.
