Compulsion Study Questions
There are obviously lots of things to think about from this novel, but here are a few questions that came to my mind.

  1. What are Jonathan Wilk's arguments against hanging Steiner and Straus? Which do you think is the strongest argument? Why?

  2. Do you think Horn effectively responds to Wilk's arguments? Horn identifies three arguments gainst hanging in Wilk's summation. What are his replies to these arguments?

  3. Does Horn give a reason in favor of hanging Steiner and Straus?  What is it? Do you agree with it?

  4. Do you think Steiner and Straus are responsible for their crime?  Why or why not?

  5. What is the author's view of the question of responsibility?
